The purpose of the proposed fragment is to create security attributes meaning "anyone can access this event". This is useful, for example, for interaction between services and applications. But if your applications works under the same account, I think you can use NULL security attribute, but non-empty event name. See the MSDN documentation for each of used structures and functions. The SECURITY_DESCRIPTOR_REVISION value is the only available value for InitializeSecurityDescriptor function. More elaborated solutions probably can limit the shared event for given users or groups.     - Updating binary datafile shows Access Denied I wrote a widely distributed application in MS Visual C++. The application has been running ok in Windows XP for 3 years. I have been requested to transfer the application to Vista, using Installshield. The application installed ok and is registered in Vista. I can open the datafile, read and update ok.     - Sharing Data under [CommonAppData] Thank you Andy, My application is 'multi-user' aware. For example the application might show data in a grid. One user might drag the column widths to his preferred setting which the app stores in the config database in records identified by that user's login name so that when that user returns to the same grid the columns are sized to his preferred widths. This data wouldn't 'break' if the config database got virtualized the user wouldn't notice. The machine would just end up having config databases scattered across different user's virtual storage areas. So, it isn't too bad that this data gets vrtualized. However, I'd prefer it if is was all in one file so if the application is migrated to another computer then my automatic backup/restore prodedures can take car of that. The main problem is the data that the application creates. The application is an inventory manager database. User-A comes to work in the morning. Creates/updates inventory, purchase orders etc and then he goes home when he's done his 8 hours. User-B then comes on duty, using the same computer, starts the inventory program and, because of the virtualization, he can't see any of the work done by his colleague. What is the 'standard' microsoft recommended way to 'share' the application data in this way. Both users really MUST have access to the same data. My scenario is not unique. It must be very common.     - reading video data from an embedded resource dll as bytestream and playing it (DirectShow) im trying to add video playback capabilities to an application which requires the videos being embedded in a dll as embedded resource. this is done in visual studio with C#. Currently i can play a video if i have it sitting somewhere on the hardrive using FilGraphManager.RenderFile(string). but now insead of reading from the sample.avi i want to read from a video embedded in a dll. when reading from the embedded resource i can get a byte stream of data but i have no idea how i could render and display this byte stream. it would be great if someone could point me to the right direction. even if there is another way to play video that is embedded in a dll i am open to suggestions. videos that are to be embedded are in wmv format. thanks Tag: How to allow a user to define a Workflow at Runtime using Workflow Designer

    - vista blocks application at startup Phil, My name is Paul Volosen and I am working with the UAC team to evangelize solutions that will help mitigate this exact issue. I can see that having an application blocked that starts in the user logon path and not being able to apply a solution that permanently circumvents the problem is very frustrating. It's frustrating for developers and users themselves. Fortunately, there are solutions that exist which can be applied to achieve the desired result and allow the functionality to be accessible at startup, some of them being very trivial. I am in process of publishing a whitepaper that details the available solutions and I'd like to discuss them offline with you. I would also like to provide some background on UAC in this thread to address some of the more generic questions listed above. Developing UAC and implementing it has been a challenging job that required many tradeoffs and compromises. One of the tradeoffs is mandating that all applications that require Administrator-level privileges to elevate. Although this has been the stated requirement since XP, it is now enforced in Vista. Furthermore, to mitigate possible customer dissatisfaction with elevations AND decrease the system attack surface area, we had to block applications that require elevations in the user logon path. This applies both to Microsoft and non-Microsoft applications, signed or unsigned apps. We are unable to provide specific workarounds for such applications because determining the heuristics is tricky from a security and proper implementation perspective. We realize this has resulted in more work for not only for our own product groups but ISV’s as well. We have made significant efforts to limit the effect of this on ISV and in the process of publishing a whitepaper that I’d like to send you offline. We truly believe that this change will greatly increase the security of the OS and increase consumer satisfaction which is beneficial for the Windows platform and the eco systems of applications which run on it.     - 16-bit DLLs and Vista More info on the ShellExecute function in Windows Vista: We have also found that a 16-bit C program has the same problem as the VB 3 programs. 32 bit versions of the code work fine however. I can create an ActiveX EXE object from the 16 bit code to call the 32-bit version of ShellExecute (using create object), but I still cannot find out why parameters are not being passed to the launched executable from 16-bit version of ShellExecute.     - COM+ Service registration error I hope someone out there has had this error before or knows what I have done wrong. I am busy writting a Com+ service that will provide a Word Document Object to a program we are developing. I am busy writing the base of it as it were, just getting the service class without the Word handling done, and getting it registered to check if we can access it. What happens is when I register the dll (regsvcs -fc ...) it tells me that there is an unknown error and goes on about ComVisibility. I have created the class, and set various attributes, of those that you won't see in the code below is [assembly: AssemblyKeyFile("wordService.snk")] and [assembly: ApplicationActivation(ActivationOption.Server)] which are in AssemblyInfo.cs.     - Elevated program gets access denied for CreateFile but non elevated works fine Have a program name Updater. Under vista this triggers the auto install elevation stuff. I embed a manifest specifying as invoker (also tried putting the manifest as separate file in the directory). Neither option turns off the UAC prompt. Allowing the elevation then causes CreateFile to get access denied trying to open a network share for read. Renaming the executable will allow it to work just fine. If I change the manifest to be requireAdministrator then it always gets the acess denied even when renamed. Would think having more permissions wouldnt stop file access from working So what am I missing about manifest files or UAC elevation Having to elevate isn't a huge problem if it would actually work.     - How can a folder's Security setting be changed from code I am updating an application for Vista that needs to allow all Users to read and write to a shared data file. The program creates a folder in C:\ProgamData using the SHGetFolderPath API function and then creates the data file in this folder whenever the first User exits the program. However, unless the Security setting for this folder is set so all Users can Modify it (not the default setting), Vista does not allow a different User to write to this file. Instead, Vista creates a new folder and file in the VirtualStore folder of the User (as Users\users_name\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\my folder\my data file). I can manually change this setting (after the first User exits the program) on the Security Tab of the folder's Properties sheet and the program then works correctly for all Users.     - XOML files In WF Visual Designers Hi, When we create a workflow application that comprises of around 10 XOML files - and each one of them contains around 4 activities - the development environment that meets both s/w and h/w criteria for VS 2005 and latest VS extensions for WF - slows down frustratingly. Any activity (not in WF terms :-) ) such as opening up the XOML files, dragging and dropping an activity into the designer, saving the files is frustratingly slow and CPU utilization shoots upto more than 90% (though the development environment is 1GB RAM with enough hard disk space).     - How to open the *.odttf format of font source I'm not sure what environment you're working on. If you're on Windows platforms, you can use GDI, or GDI+ to render XPS glyphs. On other platform, you need a TrueType rendering API. If you need to implement your own TrueType rasterization engine, it will be lots of work, because TrueType font is a very complicated data structure. If you want to read more about TrueType fonts, read TrueType/OpenType specifications, MSDN, and my book. My GDI book has one long chapter on fonts and one long chapter on text.     - State Workflow runs a bit and then, well nothing... (and its driving me nuts!) I have added the tracking service to get an idea of where it has gone, and it just indicates that the base WorkflowActivity is running (according to the workflow monitor sample app) I set a breakpoint in the code of the very first custom activity in the start state, and it goes into its constructor, but not into its Execute override. I've seen this issue before and its just gotten itself resolved somehow, but this time I've been struggling with it all day. My workflow is hosted in global.asax, and the runtime is stored in Application[], and I am using the manual scheduler. I create an instance of the workflow, passing in a class instance as a parameter ("ApprovalContext"), and get back an instance id OK. I'm following the instructions for debugging (eg set the workflow project as startup, set it to start the URL, and then attach to the asp.net dev server). I have used a DependencyProperty in the workflow itself, and it implements a simple interface (I do this so I can find an Activity that implements my interface and get APprovalContext from it when required). I cannot change the logon for the service. The service is set to start automatically. I have recontacted Microsoft support... The support engineer said that they are looking into it, but want me to reinstall, which I only want to do as an extreme last resort. Here is the gentleman (below) helping me. I know it's not earth shattering or hazardous to my health, but I am sure that myself and the others that have this problem sure would like someone to take a serious look at the issue and fix it!     - Custom SetStateActivity to log state changes + reason I really want to write a custom SetStateActivity, that has an extra parameter of "reason" and can log the current state, the new state and the reason to our log file for audit purposes. Obviously SetStateActivity is sealed, and I'd rather not use reflector to get all the code for SetStateActivity, designers, etc as it looks painful and is usually a bad idea.     - live video overlay at 20% cpu on primary monitor, 100% cpu on TV out?? Hey everyone, I am doing overlays onto a live TV broadcast and have written a custom VMR Allocator-presenter to do the job. I render my overlay ( bitmaps and/or text ) onto a DIrectDraw surface and blit it over the video within the 'PresentImage' routine. Recently I tested my program with full screen playback on the TV output from our units ( they only have basic onboard video cards) and the CPU usage jumped to 100% with choppy playback. With full screen on the primary monitor I get CPU usage of 20% with great playback even with overlays. I have also tried playing the capture feed in a window, and as soon as any part of the window hits the second monitor the CPU again jumps to 100%. I ran the DirectX Diagnostics tools to check the capabilities of the second monitor, and found that ‘AGP Texture Acceleration’ is unsupported. This is the only difference I can find between the two monitors. Could this be the cause of the problem I have also tried setting the default monitor to the secondary monitor through the IVMRMonitorConfig interface and performance didn’t improve. Finally I get good performance on the second monitor when I remove my all my code used to perform overlays and call the standard VMR presentation routine, which may suggest that the video card does not like when I use the DirectDraw surfaces to perform overlays on the secondary monitor. Has anybody here experience anything like this before I was thinking that perhaps the DirectDraw surfaces may not be handled by hardware for TV output, although I hope this is not the case. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.I hope this makes sense, if anyone would like more detail juat let me know. (and hello to Michel R, you will recognise this question im sure!) I believe the Workflow Designer will be a very useful tool for designers, but is there any way to present the Workflow Designer to a user, within an application, to allow them to build activities and link them into a Workflow at runtime
