    - Updating binary datafile shows Access Denied I wrote a widely distributed application in MS Visual C++. The application has been running ok in Windows XP for 3 years. I have been requested to transfer the application to Vista, using Installshield. The application installed ok and is registered in Vista. I can open the datafile, read and update ok. When saving the file, I get the obnoxious ACCESS DENIED message. The file is NOT set to READ-ONLY. Tag: Does anybody know?

    - Vista:VB6 Checkboxes and Radio buttons dont show that they get focus when tabbed onto when using MS Windows common controls 6 When running a VB6 program on Vista that has checkboxes and/or radio buttons,, and you tab between the fields, you cannot see which of the fields has focus. In XP it showed focus by putting a rectangle around the checkbox and its caption, which does not occur on Vista. The program is using a manifest embedded as a resource to use xp/vista themes. You can replicate by placing some checkboxes and a text box on a form and compile as a standard exe. run on XP and you can see which field has focus. Run on Vista and you can only see when the textbox gets focus. Tag: Does anybody know?

    - reading video data from an embedded resource dll as bytestream and playing it (DirectShow) im trying to add video playback capabilities to an application which requires the videos being embedded in a dll as embedded resource. this is done in visual studio with C#. Currently i can play a video if i have it sitting somewhere on the hardrive using FilGraphManager.RenderFile(string). but now insead of reading from the sample.avi i want to read from a video embedded in a dll. when reading from the embedded resource i can get a byte stream of data but i have no idea how i could render and display this byte stream. it would be great if someone could point me to the right direction. even if there is another way to play video that is embedded in a dll i am open to suggestions. videos that are to be embedded are in wmv format. thanks Tag: Does anybody know?

    - vista blocks application at startup Hi, I'm a software developer and I have a question about Vista. Our application (a .NET 1.1 app) requires Administrator access and we have the "requiresAdministrator" access level defined in the application manifest. That part is working fine. However, our application needs to startup when the computer boots so we have it in the "startup" folder. For some reason (I can't imagine why) Vista puts it in the "blocked startup programs" list and the user needs to manually launch it. This is not acceptable for us. Is there any way to circumvent this problem And by the way, why is there no way for the user to say "I want this app to run every time I reboot so stop blocking it!" On a side note, I notice that when I bring up Windows Defender it shows the list of startup applications and our app is listed as "not classified", while there are other (Microsoft) applications that have a classification of "Permitted". I don't know if this is related or not, but I'm wondering if it is, how do we get our app to be "permitted" (it is digitally signed). Thanks! Phil Tag: Does anybody know?

    - vista defrag i was wondering if there is a way to view defrag in vista the same way you can i XP (sort of like a clissic view) and what i mean by that is the XP progress chart that XP has it also displays the current files defragmenting or being moved i dont wish to use any 3rd party software to do this if there is no way to view a clissic mode in vista, will there be a patch released M$ i hate not being able to view what defrag is doing..... its making me feel helpless and insecure Tag: Does anybody know?

    - SamplesWCFWFOrcasFebCTP does not work Hi I have VS2008 beta 2. I am trying to run SamplesWCFWFOrcasFebCTP examples. (SequentialWorkflowService) I had to do simple changes as things changed since the CTP. Finaly it compiles... But when I run it I get the following exception: (by the client) WorkflowTerminated: There is no context attached to incoming message for the Service and the current operation is not marked with "CanCreateInstance = true". In order to communicate with this service check whether the incoming binding supports the context protocol and has a valid context initialized. As I know if I use wsHttpContextBinding I do not have to init the context. In the example the first receive activity is marked with "CanCreateInstance = true" what is the problem why doesn’t the context pass to the client Manu cohen-yashar Tag: Does anybody know?

    - 16-bit DLLs and Vista Everytime I see information on what doesn't work in Vista, the 16-bit support issue always comes up w/ respect to the 64-bit version of Vista. However, earlier tech issues never mentioned 64-bit Vista and 16-bit apps/dlls in the same breath and 32 bit Vista was unheard of... So...are 16 bit apps/dlls compatible w/ 32 bit Vista If not, where can I find that info If so, do I have to change settings in Vista to make them work Are there side-effects that I need to know about Tag: Does anybody know?

Cardspace Id selector was working fine under XP.     - UAC Assembly Name Display Hi MSDN PPL, I am having an issue with Vista UAC. I am requesting admin rights using a manifest file compiled resource - below.     - COM+ Service registration error I hope someone out there has had this error before or knows what I have done wrong. I am busy writting a Com+ service that will provide a Word Document Object to a program we are developing. I am busy writing the base of it as it were, just getting the service class without the Word handling done, and getting it registered to check if we can access it. What happens is when I register the dll (regsvcs -fc ...) it tells me that there is an unknown error and goes on about ComVisibility. I have created the class, and set various attributes, of those that you won't see in the code below is [assembly: AssemblyKeyFile("wordService.snk")] and [assembly: ApplicationActivation(ActivationOption.Server)] which are in AssemblyInfo.cs.     - Elevated program gets access denied for CreateFile but non elevated works fine Have a program name Updater. Under vista this triggers the auto install elevation stuff. I embed a manifest specifying as invoker (also tried putting the manifest as separate file in the directory). Neither option turns off the UAC prompt. Allowing the elevation then causes CreateFile to get access denied trying to open a network share for read. Renaming the executable will allow it to work just fine. If I change the manifest to be requireAdministrator then it always gets the acess denied even when renamed. Would think having more permissions wouldnt stop file access from working So what am I missing about manifest files or UAC elevation Having to elevate isn't a huge problem if it would actually work.     - How can a folder's Security setting be changed from code I am updating an application for Vista that needs to allow all Users to read and write to a shared data file. The program creates a folder in C:\ProgamData using the SHGetFolderPath API function and then creates the data file in this folder whenever the first User exits the program. However, unless the Security setting for this folder is set so all Users can Modify it (not the default setting), Vista does not allow a different User to write to this file. Instead, Vista creates a new folder and file in the VirtualStore folder of the User (as Users\users_name\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\my folder\my data file). I can manually change this setting (after the first User exits the program) on the Security Tab of the folder's Properties sheet and the program then works correctly for all Users. Is there any way to do this through program code via an API call My application is written in Visual Basic 6, and works correctly in Windows XP. Tag: Does anybody know?

    - GetLogicalDrives does not brings network volumes in Windows VISTA Hi all, I am working on a backup solution application; My application displays All drives available in the systems (All the drives which are visible in the MyComputer window) in all windows operating systems except Windows VISTA. I debugged the code in VISTA and found that the API call GetLogicalDrives() doesn't get/fetch the network/shared drives which are shown in the Mycomputer window. I have searched on the web also but no solution available on the net; thats why i decided to post my query to this forum. Please help me out to resolve my problem.     - XOML files In WF Visual Designers Hi, When we create a workflow application that comprises of around 10 XOML files - and each one of them contains around 4 activities - the development environment that meets both s/w and h/w criteria for VS 2005 and latest VS extensions for WF - slows down frustratingly. Any activity (not in WF terms :-) ) such as opening up the XOML files, dragging and dropping an activity into the designer, saving the files is frustratingly slow and CPU utilization shoots upto more than 90% (though the development environment is 1GB RAM with enough hard disk space).     - Beta 1 Viewer manual uninstall in Vista RTM I get the follwoing message when attempting to open a file I saved in Word12 RTM as an XPS document: "The Beta period has expired for the XML Paper Specification Viewer" The Beta 1 Viewer app is not listed in the Add/Remove Programs list to uninstall, my XPS docs won't open in the default VistaIE7 user agent as they should.     - State Workflow runs a bit and then, well nothing... (and its driving me nuts!) I have added the tracking service to get an idea of where it has gone, and it just indicates that the base WorkflowActivity is running (according to the workflow monitor sample app) I set a breakpoint in the code of the very first custom activity in the start state, and it goes into its constructor, but not into its Execute override. I've seen this issue before and its just gotten itself resolved somehow, but this time I've been struggling with it all day. My workflow is hosted in global.asax, and the runtime is stored in Application[], and I am using the manual scheduler. I create an instance of the workflow, passing in a class instance as a parameter ("ApprovalContext"), and get back an instance id OK. I'm following the instructions for debugging (eg set the workflow project as startup, set it to start the URL, and then attach to the asp.net dev server). I have used a DependencyProperty in the workflow itself, and it implements a simple interface (I do this so I can find an Activity that implements my interface and get APprovalContext from it when required). I have sqlpersistance service added, and it is showing data has been persisted. the tracking service shows the following events (from the WorkflowInstanceEvent table, 3rd column is the event id, 0 is created, 12 is started) 25 6 0 25/09/2007 11:44:36 1 NULL NULL 25/09/2007 11:44:36 26 6 12 25/09/2007 11:44:36 2 NULL NULL 25/09/2007 11:44:36 so its being started, but then nothing. any ideas Tag: Does anybody know?

    - Serious security concern: event log error 4201 ERROR_WMI_INSTANCE_NOT_FOUND 4201 The instance name passed was not recognized as valid by a WMI data provider. http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms681387.aspx < this is the only error explanation I have found so far (it's really not very helpful) I cannot start the event log service no matter what I try as a workaround. I really don't know what caused it to stop or what is causing the error above when I try to start it, but I have a hunch it is a compatibility issue. This is a serious security concern and I need it fixed ASAP. I hope MS addresses this issue in their next update... Tag: Does anybody know?

    - Custom SetStateActivity to log state changes + reason I really want to write a custom SetStateActivity, that has an extra parameter of "reason" and can log the current state, the new state and the reason to our log file for audit purposes. Obviously SetStateActivity is sealed, and I'd rather not use reflector to get all the code for SetStateActivity, designers, etc as it looks painful and is usually a bad idea. I've read most of the posts on this sort of topic and its all a bit depressing really! If I just add a statefinalization activity to each state then I cant easily get hold of the new state, and definitelky cant get hold of a new Reason string. any good advice or solutions Tag: Does anybody know?

    - live video overlay at 20% cpu on primary monitor, 100% cpu on TV out?? Hey everyone, I am doing overlays onto a live TV broadcast and have written a custom VMR Allocator-presenter to do the job. I render my overlay ( bitmaps and/or text ) onto a DIrectDraw surface and blit it over the video within the 'PresentImage' routine. Recently I tested my program with full screen playback on the TV output from our units ( they only have basic onboard video cards) and the CPU usage jumped to 100% with choppy playback. With full screen on the primary monitor I get CPU usage of 20% with great playback even with overlays. I have also tried playing the capture feed in a window, and as soon as any part of the window hits the second monitor the CPU again jumps to 100%. I ran the DirectX Diagnostics tools to check the capabilities of the second monitor, and found that ‘AGP Texture Acceleration’ is unsupported. This is the only difference I can find between the two monitors. Could this be the cause of the problem I have also tried setting the default monitor to the secondary monitor through the IVMRMonitorConfig interface and performance didn’t improve. Finally I get good performance on the second monitor when I remove my all my code used to perform overlays and call the standard VMR presentation routine, which may suggest that the video card does not like when I use the DirectDraw surfaces to perform overlays on the secondary monitor. Has anybody here experience anything like this before I was thinking that perhaps the DirectDraw surfaces may not be handled by hardware for TV output, although I hope this is not the case. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.I hope this makes sense, if anyone would like more detail juat let me know. (and hello to Michel R, you will recognise this question im sure!)     - MS Access and VISTA I've seen reports of Access and VISTA errors, but mine is a little different. When I tried to open an Access database, Vista seems to halt... then after a long while, Vista reports it can't find the file, but in the background, the file has began to open, but is asking me to verify I want to open the DB, because it MIGHT have some security issues. I can canel the first message, and continue with the DB application. Any ideas on how to fix this Tag: Does anybody know?

    - searchfilterhost.exe using up to 35% of CPU Hello, I just got the retail version of Windows Vista business. I quickly noticed that my system was sometimes experiencing extreme slowdowns, so I went into the task manager and found out that the CPU load was always at 100% when this happened. I then opened the ressource monitor and expanded the CPU bar. Much to my surprise I found out that a process called searchfilterhost.exe was using between 20% and 35% of my CPU (I have a 3Ghz P4...!). I learned that this process was used by the windows search and indexing service. But why the hell is it taking so much CPU juice ! I remember working on my iTunes library in WinXP and everything was fluid, but in Vista, it can come to a point where just selecting songs in the list can get super slow (ie: you click on multiple songs and there comes a point where the 5 last songs you clicked on get highlighted 15 seconds later...) I kinda solved this problem by disabling indexing on the partition where my music library is, and by disabling Windows Search in Administrative tools>Services. Now everything is as fast as it should be...! But would there be another way to obtain this result I think this is an issue that should seriously need Microsoft's attention...what about a fix to recalibrate ressource usage by the Windows Search service Tag: Does anybody know?
